Struggling Penguins to face lowly Thrashers

ATLANTA (Ticker) - Despite being without their captain, the Pittsburgh Penguins have yet to suffer much of a scoring slump.

The Penguins will look to win two in a row when they visit the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday.

Sidney Crosby has missed Pittsburgh's past four games after sustaining a high ankle sprain, and the team has gone 2-1-1 with 14 goals in his absence. A win on Wednesday would vault the club into first place in the Atlantic Division.

The Penguins got a pair of goals from Ryan Malone in a 4-2 victory on Tuesday over the New Jersey Devils, which pushed them into second place in the division, one point shy of the Flyers (28-16-5).

Crosby is expected to miss at least the next six weeks, and All-Star Evgeni Malkin and second-year center Jordan Staal will have to combine with Malone to make up for the loss of the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner.

The Thrashers are trying to snap a five-game slide which has seen them get outscored 23-6. The worst defensive team in the NHL, Atlanta has yielded a league-high 175 tallies.

Top scorer Ilya Kovalchuk, who sat out Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Rangers while serving a one-game suspension, has gone five games without scoring a goal and four games without putting a point on the board.

The teams have split two meetings this season, with the Penguins claiming a 5-0 victory on November 24 and the Thrashers scraping by, 3-2, in a shootout on January 12.
