Red Wings look to extend winning streak vs. Bruins

Feb 2, 2008 - 12:08 PM Detroit (39-10-4) at Boston (27-19-5) 7:00 pm EST

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The All-Star break apparently has not slowed down the Detroit Red Wings.

After entering the break with four straight victories, the Red Wings look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they visit the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Detroit, which leads the race for the Presidents' Trophy with 82 points, has won each of its two games since the midseason gala. During their current six-game run, the Red Wings have allowed a total of just eight goals as goaltenders Dominik Hasek and All-Star Chris Osgood each have posted a shutout.

The Red Wings' other three All-Stars also have been major contributors of late. Henrik Zetterberg, who was voted to start for the Western Conference but skipped the event in order to nurse a back injury, has scored in both games since the break.

On Friday, the Swede snapped a scoreless tie with a wraparound goal with 2:20 left in the third period as Detroit posted a 2-0 victory over Colorado.

Pavel Datsyuk had a pair of assists against the Avalanche, giving him five in the last two games. And captain Nicklas Lidstrom has scored a goal and set up three others in the Red Wings' last two wins.

Detroit is hoping its stable of All-Stars can help it beat Boston in regulation for the first time since December 11, 1999. The Red Wings will need big performances in order to beat Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas, who is 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average in his last three starts.

The winning goalie in Sunday's All-Star Game, Thomas stopped 37 shots in a 3-1 win over Nashville on Tuesday and followed with a 30-save performance in a 4-1 triumph over Ottawa two days later.

Seeking to match its season-high of four straight wins, Boston also is hoping All-Star Game hero Marc Savard can continue his torrid pace. Savard, who scored the winning goal for the Eastern Conference on Sunday, has recorded three tallies and 12 assists during his current nine-game points streak.

The Bruins are 5-0-2 in the last seven meetings between the clubs.
