Turco, Hagman help Stars douse Flames

Feb 3, 2008 - 6:55 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Marty Turco and the Dallas Stars really enjoyed their trip through Western Canada.

Turco made 31 saves and Niklas Hagman scored the game-winning goal as the Stars completed a perfect three-game road swing with a 2-1 triumph over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.

Captain Brenden Morrow also tallied for Dallas, which defeated Vancouver and Edmonton on its first two stops on the road trip.

Turco, who stopped 32 shots in Friday's 4-1 victory over the Oilers, was the difference once again in this one. The 32-year-old netminder made 11 saves in the first period, 14 in the second and six in the third.

"We spent a lot of time in our zone," Turco said. "Our forwards did a great job coming back. Tonight, we had that work ethic and made smart plays. We didn't give them a chance to set up."

The native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has won four straight against Canadian teams and is 7-1-1 against non-American clubs this season. However, he is looking forward to returning to the Lone Star State.

"It's cold up here," Turco said. "I'll be happy to be going home tomorrow."

Hagman snapped a 1-1 tie at 2:28 of the third period with his 19th goal of the season. The Finnish right wing picked up a loose puck behind the net, skated to the left of Miikka Kiprusoff and launched a bad-angle shot over the netminder's shoulder.

It was Hagman's sixth game-winner of the campaign, tripling his previous career high.

"To be honest, I didn't see if there was room there or not," Hagman said. "I was just trying to get it at the net, and it managed to get in."

Morrow had tied the contest with 6:13 left in the middle period, when he deflected All-Star Mike Ribeiro's shot from the left faceoff circle past Kiprusoff.

Kiprusoff made 22 saves for Calgary, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

The Flames went 0-for-7 on the man advantage in this one as the Stars have successfully killed 22 consecutive penalties.

"A big factor is Marty Turco," Hagman said of the penalty kill. "He played tremendously again."

"Anytime you get seven power plays in a one-goal game and don't get any goals, you have to look at yourself and admit that was the difference," Flames captain Jarome Iginla said.

Iginla is mired in a season-high goal-scoring drought, which now stands at eight games. But the All-Star believed the reason he was blanked in this one was the opposing goalie.

"Turco played really well," Iginla said. "If I keep getting chances, then they'll go in."

Daymond Langkow opened the scoring at 5:37 of the second period, as he stuffed in the rebound of Alex Tanguay's shot from the left circle.
