Doan scores twice as Coyotes sink Kings

Nov 5, 2006 - 5:39 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- After a four-game layoff due to a back injury, Shane Doan made his presence felt.

Doan scored two goals and Ladislav Nagy added three assists to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to just their fourth victory in 14 games this season, a 6-4 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings.

Although both teams have struggled offensively for much of the campaign, they each scored three times in the first period.

After Doan opened the scoring with his third goal of the season just 2:50 into the contest, Los Angeles came back with consecutive tallies by rookie Anze Kopitar and Tom Kostopoulos in a 2:43 span for a 2-1 lead.

The Kings outburst prompted Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky to replace goaltender veteran Curtis Joseph with David LeNeveu, who quickly yielded a tally by Derek Armstrong - his second - 4:26 later.

"I felt relaxed when I came into the game," LeNeveu said. "I did feel a few jitters, but after the initial shot I just fell right into my game. I felt the guys gave me a good look at shots and I saw almost all of them."

However, Phoenix netted five consecutive goals to take the lead for good. Enver Lisin scored his first career tally with 6:01 left in the opening session and Georges Laraque added his second of the season 28 seconds later, tying the score, 3-3.

"It's one game, and we need to put a string together of two, three, four, five. We have to go after them all, but it was a big win, especially after being down 3-1, to respond to some adversity," Doan said.

Doan put Phoenix in front with his second goal at 2:26 of the second period and defenseman Ed Jovanovski added his third of the season at 5:33, which led Kings coach Marc Crawford to pull Mathieu Garon in favor of Dan Cloutier.

"We had a bad half-minute at the end of the first period that allowed them to get back into the game," Crawford said. "You have to give them credit. They came hard in the second period and it seemed like every chance they got they ended up capitalizing on."

Blue-liner Dennis Seidenberg capped the five-goal burst with his first goal of the season at 6:38 of the second session for the Coyotes, who were outshot, 43-24.

"We got down, 3-1, but we scored a couple of nice goals to get back into the game," Gretzky said. "Everybody contributed so it was a nice come from behind victory for our team.

Michael Cammalleri, Aaron Miller and Mattias Norstrom collected two assists each for the Kings, who were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

"We didn't play smart with a 3-1 lead," Norstrom said. "We started to play back on our heels and we gave them a chance to get back into the game. We have to find ways to put teams away it was a real disappointing loss tonight."

Saturday's game was defenseman Rob Blake's 1000th of his career.
