Sabres try to regroup after first regulation loss

Nov 5, 2006 - 4:13 PM Buffalo (11-1-1) at NY Rangers (7-6-0) 5:00 pm EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres finally lost a game in regulation and try to bounce back when they face the New York Rangers on Sunday.

Buffalo lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-1, on Saturday after going 12 games without dropping one in regulation. Jochen Hecht gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead in the first period, but that was it as the Leafs took the game over.

Ryan Miller stopped 29-of-33 shots for the Sabres, who went 0-for-6 on the power play.

Buffalo also absorbed an injury to one of its top players as Maxim Afinogenov left the game with what club officials termed an "upper body" injury.

The Rangers seems to enjoy playing on the road, and it might be interesting to see how they perform at home. New York completed a four-game road trip with a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

Matt Cullen and Martin Straka both scored to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead before Brendan Shanahan added an empty-net goal to seal the victory. New York netminder Kevin Weekes started his second straight game and recorded 29 saves.

Shanahan's goal was the 610th of his career, tying him with Bobby Hull for 12th place on the all-time list. He has five goals and four assists in his current six-game point streak.
