Predators, Blues battle for playoff positioning

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) - The St. Louis Blues are making a push toward the top eight in the Western Conference. The Nashville Predators are clinging to their playoff spot.

The Blues will look to move one step closer when they visit the Predators on Saturday.

St. Louis has won two in a row to move within five points of the Colorado Avalanche for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. The Blues beat the Avalanche, 4-1, on Thursday as goaltender Manny Legace stopped 39 shots.

Ryan Johnson scored St. Louis' second shorthanded goal of the season and Paul Kariya scored his 15th goal in the victory. Kariya leads the team with 50 points.

The Predators will be looking to recover from an embarrassing 6-1 thrashing against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. Goaltenders Chris Mason and Dan Ellis yielded three goals apiece.

The setback ended a two-game stretch in which Nashville had rattled off 10 goals.

The Predators are clinging to the seventh spot in the West, one point ahead of the Colorado Avalanche (30-23-5).

The Blues won the first three games of the series this season, but Nashville exacted a measure of revenge on January 21, earning a 6-3 victory.
