Oilers assign first-round pick Yamamoto to WHL

Nov 6, 2017 - 5:33 PM The Edmonton Oilers assigned forward Kailer Yamamoto to the Western Hockey League's Spokane Chiefs on Monday.

Yamamoto, 19, played in nine games with the Oilers, posting three assists, two penalty minutes and 21 shots. He recorded his first NHL point on Oct. 14 against the Ottawa Senators.

Yamamoto was selected by the Oilers in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2017 NHL draft.

The 5-foot-8, 154-pound Yamamoto appeared in 65 games with the Chiefs in 2016-17, leading the team in goals (42) and assists (57) with 99 points and 46 penalty minutes. He was named to the 2016-17 WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team.

The native of Spokane, Wash., owns 227 points (84 goals, 143 assists) and 130 penalty minutes in 190 career WHL games. Yamamoto played in 12 career playoff games, posting 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 16 penalty minutes.

The Oilers also recalled Brad Malone from the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League.

Malone, 28, has two goals, one assist and nine penalty minutes in eight games with Bakersfield this season. He also played in three games for the Oilers, with two penalty minutes. The 6-1, 210-pounder owns 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) and 190 penalty minutes in 179 career NHL games.
