Nov 7, 2006 - 2:45 PM Carolina (7-6-2) at New Jersey (7-5-1) 7:00 pm EST

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - Martin Brodeur's shutout of the Carolina Hurricanes in the season opener helped the New Jersey Devils open the campaign on a solid start.

Brodeur is expected to be back in goal for the Devils, who go for their fourth victory in five games when they begin a three-game homestand Tuesday against the defending champion Hurricanes.

The league's third-winningest goaltender (453), Brodeur stopped 29 shots for New Jersey in a 4-0 triumph over Carolina on October 6. It was the first matchup of the teams since the Hurricanes ousted the Devils from last spring's playoffs in five games.

A two-time Vezina Trophy winner, Brodeur made 33 saves and Jay Pandolfo and Brian Rafalski scored for New Jersey in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

After losing its first four contests this season, Carolina has played better lately. The Hurricanes have won three of their last four, scoring 14 times in the three victories.

Ray Whitney scored twice and Erik Cole added a goal and two assists to lead Carolina in Saturday's 3-2 triumph over the Ottawa Senators.

Captain Rod Brind'Amour, last season's Selke Trophy winner, collected an assist for his 1,000th career point. He has four goals and 14 assists in his last 11 contests.
