Lightning, Wild attempt to end winless streaks
Feb 27, 2008 - 1:27 PM Minnesota (34-24-5) at Tampa Bay (25-30-7) 7:30 pm ESTTAMPA, Florida (Ticker) - With the lowest point total in the Eastern Conference, the Tampa Bay Lightning made a series of trades Tuesday.
The new-look Lightning begin the process of starting over when they host the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday.
In their biggest move, Tampa Bay traded forward Brad Richards and goaltender Johan Holmqvist to the Dallas Stars for center Jeff Halpern, forward Jussi Jokinen, goaltender Mike Smith and a 2009 fourth-round draft pick.
Richards, MVP of the playoffs when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004, was Tampa Bay's fourth-leading scorer with 51 points (18 goals, 33 assists) in 62 games.
The Lightning also traded forward Jan Hlavac to Nashville for a seventh-round pick in this year's draft and sent defenseman Jay Leach to Anaheim in exchange for right wing Brandon Segal and a seventh-round pick this season.
The Wild made one trade, picking up forward Chris Simon from the New York Islanders for a sixth-round pick in this year's draft. Simon missed 35 games this season while serving a pair of long suspensions and did not play in Tuesday's 4-1 road loss to Washington.
Minnesota is winless in its last four games, only scoring a total of four goals. Wednesday's game is the only meeting of the season between the teams. The Lightning are also winless in their last four games, including Saturday's 5-3 home loss to Boston.
