Hurricanes trying to sure-up playoff postion

Feb 28, 2008 - 1:46 PM NY Rangers (32-24-8) at Carolina (33-28-5) 7:00 pm EST

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to widen their lead in the Southeast Division when they host the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Carolina swapped left wings with the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline, sending Andrew Ladd away in exchange for Tuomu Ruutu.

The newcomer made an immediate impact with the Hurricanes on Tuesday night, arriving just prior to game time and delivering a number of hard hits as well as picking up an assist.

Sergei Samsonov scored both goals in Tuesday's 2-1 overtime victory over the New Jersey Devils which helped Carolina push its winning streak to three games and maintain a five-point edge over the Washington Capitals (29-27-8, 66 points) in the Southeast.

The winner of the Southeast is assured of at least the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff.

With 72 points, the Rangers are currently seventh in the conference, tied with the Boston Bruins (33-23-6) and one point ahead of the the Buffalo Sabres (31-24-9).

New York is 5-0-2 in its last seven contests, and has scored 22 goals in the past five games. Left Wing Sean Avery has tallied five times in the past seven games.

Carolina has taken two of the three meetings between the teams this season, outscoring New York 7-1 in its two wins.
