Canadiens, Devils battle for conference supremacy

MONTREAL (Ticker) - The New Jersey Devils own what the Montreal Canadiens want - the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Canadiens will go for their third consecutive victory and first place in the conference standings on Saturday when they host the Devils, who are one-point ahead of Montreal.

Tomas Plekanec recorded his first career hat trick with three power-play goals Friday as the Canadiens claimed a 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres and overtook the Ottawa Senators for the top spot in the Northeast Division.

The 25-year-old Plekanec already has a career-high 24 goals and 58 points this season.

Alexei Kovalev, who had a career-high four assists Friday, leads the club with 29 tallies and 67 points on the campaign. Montreal has quietly amassed 207 goals and is second in the NHL in that category, four behind Ottawa.

New Jersey on Friday lost for the first time in regulation since February 8. The Devils had 18 shots - including just two in the third period - as they were blanked, 4-0, by the Washington Capitals.

The Devils are 7-1-2 over their last 10 games.
