Coyotes still fighting for playoff spot
Mar 6, 2008 - 2:49 PM Montreal (36-22-9) at Phoenix (34-28-5) 9:00 pm ESTGLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) - Despite some inconsistent play of late, the Phoenix Coyotes are still in the Western Conference playoff mix.
The Coyotes look to improve their postseason position on Thursday when they host the Montreal Canadiens.
Phoenix is just 3-3-1 over its last seven games - with 10 goals over that span - and currently sits in 10th place with 73 points. They sit three points behind the Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators, who are tied for seventh place in the conference standings.
Following a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday, the Coyotes are seeking back-to-back wins for the first time since winning three straight games from February 14-18.
However, Phoenix has not beaten Montreal since December 9, 1998 - a span of eight games that includes three ties.
The Canadiens are looking to bounce back after having a three-game win streak snapped in a 6-4 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday.
The contest was the first in a four-game Western Conference road trip for Montreal, which owns a 20-10-4 record away from home this season, the second-best road mark in the NHL.
