Forsberg still searching for first point vs. Stars
Mar 8, 2008 - 11:48 AM Dallas (41-24-5) at Colorado (36-26-6) 3:00 pm ESTDENVER (Ticker) -- Peter Forsberg is back in uniform for the Colorado Avalanche. Now he needs to get back on the scoresheet.
Forsberg will be looking for his first point since returning to the NHL when the Avalanche host the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
Colorado, which has won five games in a row, currently sits in seventh place in the Western Conference. Forsberg returned to the lineup Tuesday after signing with the club on February 25 and has taken part in the last two victories.
Forsberg becoming the offensive force he has been in the past will be helpful to an Avalanche team that has lost leading goal scorer Marek Svatos (knee) for the rest of the season and left wing Ryan Smyth (concussion, shoulder) indefinitely after an ugly hit last week against Los Angeles.
Colorado has done most of its damage within the Northwest Division during its recent streak, topping Vancouver twice and earning an overtime win at Calgary on February 26.
The Avalanche edged the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, 1-0, as Jose Theodore stopped 27 shots to post his second shutout of the season. Wojtek Wolski scored the lone goal in the second period.
The Pacific Division-leading Stars have had their run toward the top of the conference take a hit this week with back-to-back losses to Nashville and Phoenix. Dallas, which managed a total of two goals in the setbacks, trails the Detroit Red Wings (44-18-6) by seven points for first place in the West after being within three last week.
Brad Richards was Dallas' big trade-deadline acquisition and registered five assists in his first game with the club on February 28. But the 2004 Conn Smythe Trophy winner has not been able to find the scoresheet in two games since.
The teams have split two meetings this season, with the Avalanche claiming a 4-3 victory on Opening Night and the Stars responding with a 6-1 win on November 16. Jussi Jokinen netted had four goals in Dallas' win but was sent to Tampa Bay in the deal for Richards.
