Flames eyeing top spot in Northwest

ATLANTA (Ticker) - Despite sharing the top spot in the Northwest Division, the Calgary Flames know they need to keep winning to stay in the playoff race.

The Flames try to seize control of the division when they face the lowly Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday.

Calgary is currently tied with Colorado Avalanche atop the Northwest with 82 points and just one point ahead of the Minnesota Wild.

The Flames have not helped their cause recently, going 1-1-1, including a 3-2 setback to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Jarome Iginla and Kristian Huselius both scored power-play goals against the Capitals, but Calgary managed just two shots on goal in the third period en route to the loss.

"We generated two shots on net in the third period with an opportunity to come away at least with a point," Flames coach Mike Keenan said. "We really didn't deserve any more than what we ended up getting."

The fading Thrashers fell to 1-5-4 in their last 10 games on Tuesday, suffering a 5-2 setback to the Colorado Avalanche.

Atlanta is currently 14th in the Eastern Conference standings and has just 68 points - the third fewest in the NHL.
