Canucks seek control of Northwest Division
Mar 13, 2008 - 1:18 PM Vancouver (35-25-10) at Phoenix (35-30-5) 10:00 pm EDTGLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) - The Vancouver Canucks know how crucial every win is in the cramped Northwest Division.
After having a three-game win streak snapped, the Canucks look to rebound when they visit the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.
Vancouver missed out on a chance to move into a tie for first place in the division on Wednesday, suffering a 4-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
Mason Raymond scored the Canucks' lone goal with 2:15 remaining in the first period after the Ducks stormed out of the gate with three tallies in the first 16:49 of the opening stanza.
Despite the loss, Vancouver remains in eighth place in the Western Conference standings, one point behind the Minnesota Wild. The team is two points back of the Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames in the Northwest Division.
The Coyotes responded to a pair of regulation losses in its previous two games by picking up a 3-2 shootout victory over the Ducks on Tuesday. With the win, the Coyotes improved to 17-7-0 in the highly-competitive Pacific Division.
Shane Doan and Keith Yandle each scored a goal to lead Phoenix back from a 2-0 deficit before Ilya Bryzgalov, who made 35 saves, stopped all three of Anaheim's shootout attempts.
Radim Vrbata scored the only goal in the shootout as the Coyotes improved to 3-3-0 over their last six games.
