Blackhawks, Blue Jackets hope to start playoff surge
Mar 14, 2008 - 12:55 PM Chicago (33-31-7) at Columbus (31-28-11) 7:00 pm EDTCOLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) - The Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets meet on Friday with both teams desperately needing a surge to have any hopes of making the Western Conference playoffs.
The Blue Jackets snapped a three-game winless streak on Sunday with a 5-3 home victory over Tampa Bay in the second of five straight home games. It was the first home victory for Columbus in eight games.
"We've been disappointed in the way we've played since the All-Star break," Columbus center Michael Peca said.
It will be the first game for the Blue Jackets under new captain Rick Nash, who was given the honor in place of the recently-traded Adam Foote.
Chicago is winless in its last four games, including a 3-0 home loss to Carolina on Wednesday. The Blackhawks are trying to avoid missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. In its seventh season, Columbus has never qualified for the postseason.
Blackhawks' forward Martin Havlat had surgery on his left shoulder Thursday and should be ready for training camp in September. Havlat played in only 35 games this season and had 10 goals and 17 assists.
