Canadiens host Islanders with sights set on first place
Mar 15, 2008 - 1:33 PM NY Islanders (32-33-7) at Montreal (39-24-9) 7:00 pm EDTMONTREAL (Ticker) - The Montreal Canadiens have their sights set on first place in the Eastern Conference.
The Canadiens look to move into the top spot in the conference on Saturday when they host the New York Islanders.
With 87 points this season, Montreal currently sits in a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with the Pittsburgh Penguins and trails the conference-leading New Jersey Devils by just one point in the standings. The Devils visit the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
Montreal allowed the Ottawa Senators to pull into a tie atop the Northest Division on Thursday, suffering a 3-0 loss to their Canadian counterparts. Rookie Carey Price made 21 saves but failed to avoid his third loss in his last five starts.
The Islanders suffered their fourth straight loss during a 4-2 setback to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.
New York, which owns a dismal 1-6-0 record in March, continues to struggle without players such as Mike Sillinger, Brendan Witt, Andy Sutton, Ruslan Fedotenko and Andy Hilbert, who are all missing time due to injury.
