Without Crosby, Penguins battle desperate Flyers

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Sidney Crosby is out again. This time it is not as serious.

The Pittsburgh Penguins begin a three-game stretch without their 20-year-old captain in the lineup with a matchup against the rival Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

Crosby, who was a late scratch from Wednesday's 7-3 triumph over the Buffalo Sabres, will be out at least a week to rest his sore right ankle. Prior to Wednesday, the defending Hart Trophy winner had played in Pittsburgh's previous three contests after sitting out 21 straight games.

The Penguins, who are aiming for their third straight win, still have All-Star Evgeni Malkin, who leads the club with 39 goals and 93 points this season.

The eighth-place Flyers are desperate to end their three-game winless streak (0-1-2). The Buffalo Sabres (34-28-11) trail the Flyers by one point, while the Washington Capitals (34-30-8) and red-hot Florida Panthers (34-31-8) are just four points back.

Philadelphia nearly extended its advantage in the Eastern Conference race, but the Flyers surrendered a game-tying goal to defenseman Andrew Ference with just 27 seconds left in regulation en route to a 3-2 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

The Flyers have posted a 5-10-5 record since February 6.
