Flyers trying to hang on to final playoff spot

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - If the Philadelphia Flyers want to hold on to a playoff spot, they will need to perform better than their last outing.

The Flyers look to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat when they host the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday.

Philadelphia, which currently has a tenuous grip on the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, is coming off a 7-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday. Mike Knuble scored the lone goal for his team-leading 27th tally of the season.

The Flyers are winless over their last four contests (0-2-2) and have the Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals hot on their tail for the final playoff spot.

The Sabres (34-28-11) trail the Flyers by one point, while the Capitals (35-30-8) and Panthers (35-31-8) are two points behind.

The Thrashers are hoping to avoid their third straight loss as they close out a three-game road trip. All-Star Ilya Kovalchuk notched his 49th goal of the campaign in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the red-hot Panthers.

Kovalchuk, who has seven goals over his last seven games, is looking to join Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin as the only NHL players to record 50 goals this season.
