Coyotes visit to Edmonton yields much-needed win

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) - The slumping Phoenix Coyotes know time is running out on their postseason hopes.

The Coyotes will face another desperate team on Tuesday when they visit the Edmonton Oilers.

On Monday, the Coyotes suffered a 3-1 loss to Vancouver, and missed a chance to pull within five points of the eighth seed.

Daniel Carcillo scored the lone goal for Phoenix, which has lost two straight and has just nine games left to make up seven points. As it stands now, the Coyotes will not play a team ahead of them in the standings for the remainder of the season.

"We're in tough, we know that," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said.

The Oilers are making a late push, though the odds are against them.

Edmonton has won six of their last eight contests (6-2-0) and are seven points out of the eighth seed. Dwayne Roloson stopped 48 shots and Fernando Pisani tallied in the shootout in a 2-1 win over San Jose on Sunday.

Unlike Phoenix, Edmonton has a better chance to make up ground, as it plays seven of its last eight games against Northwest Division foes.
