Sharks eye fourth straight win
Mar 25, 2008 - 1:31 PM San Jose (45-21-9) at Phoenix (36-34-6) 10:30 pm EDTGLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) - Instead of folding after a franchise-record 11-game winning streak, the San Jose Sharks are in the midst of another impressive run.
The Sharks, in the midst of a 14-0-1 run, target their fourth straight win on Tuesday when they travel to Jobing.com Arena to meet the Phoenix Coyotes.
Since their long winning streak ended on March 16, San Jose has used its defense to start another impressive winning streak - winning each game by one goal.
Their latest effort may have been one of their best, outshooting the Anaheim Ducks (43-26-8), 43-13, on Friday in a 2-1 win over their closest Pacific Division rival.
While the Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings (50-20-6) are likely out of reach, the Sharks appear to be in good shape to hold down the No. 2 seed with the Ducks five points back in the division race.
The arrival of San Jose, which is a league-leading 26-8-3 on the road, would appear to pose a big problem for the fleeting playoff hopes of the Coyotes, whose 16-19-4 home record is amongst the worst in the league.
Phoenix held Anaheim to just 15 shots but still fell to 0-4-1 over its last five games in a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the Ducks on Saturday.
As a result, the Coyotes have only six games to make up their eight-point deficit on Vancouver (38-27-10) and Colorado (40-31-6), the teams that occupy the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the Western Conference standings.
