Capitals eye playoff spot

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) - The Washington Capitals are on fire right now, but have not been able to break into the top eight in the Eastern Conference.

The Capitals continue their quest for their first postseason berth in four years on Saturday when they visit the Florida Panthers.

Washington picked up its third straight win and second consecutive victory after regulation on Thursday, escaping with a 4-3 overtime triumph against the dismal Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tomas Fleischmann scored 2:27 into the extra session, picking up his first point since logging two assists against the Minnesota Wild on February 26.

The Capitals improved to 9-4-0 in March and stayed within two points of eighth-place Boston (39-28-10) in the conference race.

Washington also is four points back of the Carolina Hurricanes (42-30-6) for first place in the Southeast Division.

The Panthers were making a late run at the postseason with an 8-0-1 start to the month, but the team has endured back-to-back losses and is all but finished.
