Lightning look to climb out of East basement
Mar 31, 2008 - 1:21 PM Atlanta (32-39-8) at Tampa Bay (31-38-9) 7:30 pm EDTTAMPA, Florida (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Lightning will be looking to climb out of last place in the Eastern Conference when they host the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday.
The Lightning have been amongst the most disappointing teams in the East this season, getting off to a terrible start despite an roster that included Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Brad Richards and Vaclav Prospal.
Both Richards and Prospal were sent away at the February 26 trading deadline, and rookie goaltender Karri Ramo has had his ups and downs since taking over the bulk of the starts from the ineffective Johan Holmqvist.
But Tampa Bay has performed well of late, earning five points over its past three games and is coming off a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Just one point behind the Thrashers, the Lightning have four games left and a game in hand to jump ahead of their division rivals.
Atlanta began the season with six straight losses and is ending the campaign in the same fashion, dropping six of its last seven games.
The Thrashers were embarrassed, 7-1, against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. Johan Hedberg yielded all seven tallies and ranks last in the NHL with a 3.47 goals against average.
Atlanta owns a 4-2-0 record in six meetings against Tampa Bay this season. The teams also end the season against each other on April 5.
