Panthers seek franchise record
Apr 1, 2008 - 12:29 PM Florida (36-34-9) at Atlanta (33-39-8) 7:00 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, the Florida Panthers still have something to play for when they visit the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday.
The Panthers will set a franchise record with 19 road wins if they can forge a victory in one of their three remaining games.
Florida enters the contest 18-19-1 on the road and would eclipse the mark set during the team's inaugural campaign in 1993-94.
The Panthers ended their home schedule with a dismal 3-0 setback to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. With the loss, Florida was eliminated from playoff contention and will miss the postseason for the eighth consecutive season.
The Thrashers, who are the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference with only 74 points, picked up their second win in three games with a 2-0 victory over the lowly Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday.
Kari Lehtonen stopped 36 shots to earn the shutout and Ilya Kovalchuk scored both goals for Atlanta.
Kovalchuk, who scored 11 goals and had five assists in 14 games during March, leads the Thrashers with 52 goals and 86 points.
