Ovechkin, Capitals looking to push into the playoffs

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Alex Ovechkin is having a remarkable season, but the Washington Capitals are still on the outside of the playoff picture.

Ovechkin and the Capitals try to change that Tuesday when they host the Carolina Hurricanes in a critical Southeast Division showdown.

With just three games left, Washington is three points back of eighth place in the East, but just two points behind Carolina for the division lead. The team that finishes first in the Southwest is guaranteed the No. 3 seed in the East.

Carolina, which missed the playoffs last season after winning the Stanley Cup, will capture the division with a win in regulation Tuesday.

In their most recent meeting on March 25, Ovechkin tallied and Viktor Kozlov notched the decisive goal in the shootout of a 3-2 triumph.

Ovechkin leads the NHL with 109 points and 62 tallies, the first player to reach 60 goals in a season in a dozen years.

Leading compatriot Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins by five points, Ovechkin is vying to become the first Russian player to capture the Art Ross Trophy.

The All-Star scored a goal and set up another and Cristobal Huet made 32 saves as the Capitals defeated the Florida Panthers, 3-0, on Saturday.
