Canadiens close in on Northeast Division title
Apr 1, 2008 - 3:10 PM Montreal (44-25-10) at Ottawa (42-29-8) 7:30 pm EDTOTTAWA (Ticker) - The Montreal Canadiens try to move into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference and win the Northeast Division when they visit the struggling Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
Montreal is comfortably in second place in the East and is two points behind Pittsburgh (46-26-8) for first place in the standings. The Canadiens have three games remaining, while the Penguins have just two.
The Canadiens, who will clinch the Northeast if they earn at least a point, had a four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, dropping a 4-2 contest to Toronto.
The club got more bad news Monday.
Captain Saku Koivu has a broken bone in his foot and will miss the team's final three games of the regular season. He will be re-evaluated for the postseason.
Montreal has gone just 2-5-0 against the Senators, but did win the most recent contest, 7-5, on March 24 - a game the team lead 7-1 before a barrage of goals by Ottawa in the third period.
Ottawa has been struggling down the final stretch of the season, going 6-9-2 in its last 17 games, and has just one win in the last four games.
The Senators were shutout by Boston on Saturday, 4-0, and have fallen into sixth place in the East.
After starting off the season 13-1-0, Ottawa has dropped to sixth in the conference standings.
The Senators are one point behind the New York Rangers (41-27-11) and New Jersey Devils (43-28-7), but just one point ahead of both Philadelphia (40-28-11) and Boston (40-28-11).
