Slumping Hurricanes hope to regain control of Southeast

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) - The Carolina Hurricanes look to get back into the win column when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

The Hurricanes have dropped two straight and three of their last four, and find themselves tied for the Southeast Division lead with Washington (41-31-8).

Two of those three losses, which included one going beyond regulation, have come against the Capitals.

Carolina is currently sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference but could miss the playoffs if they lose control of the division lead.

Washington is in the ninth position, one point behind both Philadelphia (40-28-11) and Boston (40-28-11) for the final playoff spot.

On Tuesday, Carolina dropped a 4-1 contest to Washington as Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 63rd goal.

Tampa Bay is 2-4-1 in its last seven games and are close to clinching the worst record in the East. This season will also be the first time since 2001-02 that the Lightning finish below .500.

The Lightning were shut out for the fourth time this season with Monday's 2-0 setback to Atlanta.

The Hurricanes are 3-4-0 against Tampa Bay this season, including a 2-1 loss to the Lightning on Saturday.
