Flyers battling for playoff spot

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Flyers suddenly find themselves in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers try to get back into the playoff picture Friday when they host the New Jersey Devils.

Philadelphia gave up eighth place on Thursday as Washington (42-31-8) overtook them on the heels of a 4-1 win against Tampa Bay.

The Flyers were 5-0-1 in their previous six games before suffering a crucial 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday. Scott Hartnell and Jeff Carter scored for Philadelphia in the loss.

The Devils moved four points ahead of the idle New York Rangers (41-27-11) for fourth place in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday by forging a 3-2 shootout victory over the Boston Bruins.

Zach Parise scored in the fourth round of the shootout while Dainius Zubrus and David Clarkson each tallied in regulation to lead New Jersey to its third consecutive victory with all three coming after regulation.
