Canadiens still have a shot at top seed
Apr 5, 2008 - 2:12 PM Toronto (36-34-11) at Montreal (46-25-10) 7:00 pm EDTMONTREAL (Ticker) - The Montreal Canadiens haven't finished first in the Eastern Conference since the 1991-92 season.
They try to move one step closer to changing that on Saturday when they close out their regular season against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Canadiens (46-25-10) are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins (47-26-8) for first place in the East with 102 points and need at least a point to keep alive hopes of home-ice advantage throughout the conference playoffs.
Pittsburgh plays its season finale Sunday in Philadelphia.
Montreal enters the game 6-1-0 in their last seven games, including a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. Bryan Smolinski scored two goals to lead the Canadiens to the victory.
Despite its recent strong play, Montreal has dropped two straight to the Maple Leafs and are just 3-3-1 against their Canadian rivals this season.
Toronto fell to 1-3-1 over its last five games on Thursday, dropping an ugly 8-2 decision to the Ottawa Senators.
However, the Maple Leafs lone win during their dismal stretch came during a 4-2 victory against the Canadiens last Saturday. Anton Stralman and Jiri Tlusty both scored two goals to pace Toronto to the win.
