Lightning, Thrashers happy to end forgettable seasons
Apr 5, 2008 - 2:19 PM Tampa Bay (31-41-9) at Atlanta (33-40-8) 7:00 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - The Atlanta Thrashers and Tampa Bay Lightning meet in the season finale for both teams on Saturday.
Atlanta enters the game with just 74 points this season, the second worst total in the Eastern Conference, and fell to 2-7-0 over its last nine games on Tuesday during a 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers.
Jordan LaVallee and Mark Recchi each scored a goal to provide the offense for the Thrashers while leading-scorer Ilya Kovalchuk was held without a point for the fourth time in the last six games.
Kovalchuk has been the lone bright spot for the Thrashers this season. The 24-year-old left wing ranks second in the NHL with 52 goals, tying his career-high set during the 2005-06 campaign.
The last-place Lightning will be without superstar Vincent Lecavalier on Saturday after the All-Star left Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals in the third period with a shoulder injury.
Tampa Bay (31-41-9) has lost three straight games heading into Saturday's contest and is tied with the Los Angeles Kings (32-42-7) for the worst record in the NHL with 71 points.
