Final
Playoffs on the line for Washington
Apr 5, 2008 - 2:35 PM Florida (38-34-9) at Washington (42-31-8) 7:00 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Washington Capitals need a win or overtime loss against Florida on Saturday to secure the remaining playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
With one point, Washington will claim the Southeast Division title and the No. 3 seed in the East. A regulation loss will eliminate Washington from the playoffs and the Carolina Hurricanes (43-33-6) will win the division.
The Hurricanes failed to clinch the title during a 4-3 loss in their season finale against the Panthers on Friday.
The Capitals, seeking their first postseason berth since the 2002-03, continued their torrid pace on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over the lowly Tampa Bay Lightning.
The win was the Capitals' sixth consecutive and 10th in their last 11 contests.
Superstar Alex Ovechkin scored two goals to lead the Capitals against the Lightning, giving him 65 tallies this season - the most by a left wing in NHL history.
Ovechkin's mark surpassed Luc Robitaille, who netted 63 goals with the Los Angeles Kings during the 1992-93 season.
The Panthers enter the game on a two-game winning streak and boast a 4-3-0 record against the Capitals this season with one win coming in a shootout.
However, Florida has lost three of the last four games against the Capitals, including a 3-0 setback on March 29.
