Bruins look to improve playoff standing
Apr 5, 2008 - 2:41 PM Buffalo (38-31-12) at Boston (41-28-12) 7:00 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - The Boston Bruins have already locked up a playoff spot but can still improve their postseason position on Saturday when they host the Buffalo Sabres in the season finale for both clubs.
The Bruins clinched a playoff berth on Friday by forging a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. Captain Zdeno Chara and Phil Kessel each registered a goal while rookie Vladimir Sobotka added two assists to lead Boston to the victory.
With the win, the Bruins (41-28-12) moved into a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with Ottawa (43-31-8), which concluded its regular season on Friday.
Boston is just two points behind the New York Rangers (42-27-12) for fifth place in the East but is only one point in front of the eighth-place Philadelphia Flyers (41-29-11).
The Rangers wrap up their regular season against the New Jersey Devils on Sunday - the same day the Flyers play their finale vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Sabres were officially eliminated from playoff competition on Thursday after suffering a 3-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
Ales Kotalik scored Buffalo's only goal on a power play in the third period as the Sabres fell to 3-3-1 in their last seven games.
