Penguins target top seed in East
Apr 6, 2008 - 1:53 PM Pittsburgh (47-26-8) at Philadelphia (41-29-11) 3:00 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins showed great depth by withstanding long absences from Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury. They can cap off their dominance on Sunday with a win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Penguins aim to secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers.
Pittsburgh is two points behind Montreal (47-25-10) for the top spot in the East, but would be the top seed for the playoffs with a victory over Philadelphia because it owns one more victory than the Canadiens.
One season after finishing with the league's worst record, Philadelphia could finish sixth in the East with a win or eighth with a loss, setting up a first-round playoff series with Pittsburgh. The Flyers clinched a postseason berth with a 3-0 victory over New Jersey on Friday.
The Penguins lost Crosby, the reigning Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophy winner, to a sprained ankle for 21 games on January 18 but saw his void filled admirably by center Evgeni Malkin, who trails only Washington's Alex Ovechkin with 106 points this season.
Likewise, the absence of Fleury allowed Ty Conklin, who is 18-8-5 with a 2.51 goals-against average in 33 games this season, to shine.
Both Crosby and Fleury have returned for the Penguins, who are 4-0-1 in their last five games, including Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Flyers. Crosby and Malkin combined for three power-play goals while Fleury recorded 27 saves.
