Gomez, Rangers aim for two-game lead on Devils

NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) - The New York Rangers hope to take a commanding lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinals matchup Friday when they face the New Jersey Devils in Game Two at the Prudential Center.

Led by three assists from former New Jersey center Scott Gomez, the Rangers won the series-opener, 4-1, on Wednesday and look to take a two-games-to-none advantage before heading home on Sunday.

"It doesn't mean anything," Gomez said. "Marty (Brodeur), all those guys, they've been through it before. That's one thing about the playoffs - experience comes in. (One win) doesn't matter, tomorrow's a new day."

Ryan Callahan scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and Sean Avery and Nigel Dawes also scored in the final session for the Rangers, who went 7-0-1 against the Devils during the regular season.

New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves and has allowed just 10 goals in nine games against New Jersey this season.

The Devils, making their 11th straight postseason appearance, will need to find a way to score more goals in Game Two.

New Jersey scored the least amount of goals out of any team that qualified for the playoffs in the East.

Defenseman Paul Martin scored the lone tally on the power play, tying the game at 1-1 with 5:46 left in the second.

Brodeur made 24 saves in net for the Devils, playing in his 154th consecutive playoff game.
