Ovechkin, Capitals look to continue success vs. Flyers
Apr 13, 2008 - 12:49 PM Philadelphia at Washington 2:00 pm EDT Eastern Conference quarterfinals Capitals lead, 1-0WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Alex Ovechkin didn't waste any time making his presence felt in the postseason.
Ovechkin and the third-seeded Washington Capitals look to take a two-games-to-none lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series when they host the sixth-seeded Philadelphia Flyers in Game Two on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Ovechkin scored his first career playoff goal late in the third period, snapping a tie and leading the Capitals to a 5-4 victory over the Flyers on Friday in Game One.
"That was one of the biggest goals in my career - (the) winning goal (in an) important game for us," Ovechkin said.
The tally completed the comeback for Washington, which erased a two-goal deficit in the third period on the strength of two tallies by defenseman Mike Green. The comeback marked the first time in franchise history the Capitals have won a playoff game when trailing by two goals in the third period.
"What I learned is our team never gives up," Ovechkin said. "It doesn't matter the score, we keep on going. We believe in each other all the time."
"We never say die," Green said. "We always believe, and that was the case tonight."
Daniel Briere and Vaclav Prospal each netted a pair of goals for the Flyers, who understand the series is not lost - as long as they play a full 60 minutes in Game Two.
"It's going to be a long series," Prospal said. "That's just one game. Give (the Capitals) the credit. They battled hard and found their fans and they got the win, but I don't think we were the worse team tonight.
"We didn't put together a whole game. We just need to play a complete hockey game for 60 minutes and make sure that we don't give them any goals by us breaking the coverage like we did in the third period (on Friday)."
