Giguere, Ducks looking to extend series vs. Stars

Apr 20, 2008 - 1:36 PM Anaheim at Dallas 9:00 pm EDT Western Conference quarterfinals Stars lead, 3-2

DALLAS (Ticker) - Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the Anaheim Ducks are not yet ready to relinquish their title as defending Stanley Cup champions.

Giguere and the fourth-seeded Ducks will hope to send the series back to Anaheim for a decisive Game Seven when they visit the fifth-seeded Dallas Stars on Sunday for Game Six of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

A former Conn Smythe winner, Giguere made 40 saves as Anaheim avoided elimination Friday with a 5-2 victory over Dallas in Game Five.

"I felt really good (Friday)," Giguere said. "My job is just to try to give the team a chance to win. It wasn't always pretty, but we did the job and found a way to win. It was do-or-die. I wanted to leave it all on the table."

All-Star Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne and defenseman Sean O'Donnell each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who still trail in the series, three games to two.

"I guess desperation is the descriptive as far as the game was concerned," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "We had our fair share of scoring chances and I'm sure they had their fair share. I thought Giguere was the best player on the ice."

The Ducks, who went 16-5 during the last season's playoffs, will be desperate yet again for Game Six. Not only is the team facing elimination from the best-of-seven series, but Anaheim has won just two of its six meetings with the Stars in Dallas this season.

Dallas will have its fair share of desperation as well, wanting to end the series without having to face a do-or-die situation in Anaheim.

"Obviously you don't want to give them any life," Stars blue-liner Stephane Robidas said. "They've been successful in the playoffs and they know how to win. We just have to focus on Sunday and not think about it further or what's going to happen."
