Flyers, Canadiens head to Philly with series even at 1-1
Apr 28, 2008 - 1:30 PM Montreal at Philadelphia 7:00 pm EDT Eastern Conference semifinals Series tied, 1-1PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers may have stolen home-ice advantage in the Eastern Conference semifinal series, but the Montreal Canadiens usually feel right at home in the City of Brotherly Love in the playoffs.
With the series tied at one game apiece, the top-seeded Canadiens hope to continue their postseason success in Philadelphia when they visit the sixth-seeded Flyers on Monday.
Montreal is 9-1 all-time on the road against Philadelphia in the playoffs.
"We've had some success in their building," Montreal captain Saku Koivu said. "It's going to be a tough one. Just watching the first round when they played Washington, there's great atmosphere there, and they're playing well right now, so we're not expecting anything easy."
But it's the Flyers who have the momentum coming into this pivotal contest after Martin Biron and R.J. Umberger helped their club erase the memories of a heartbreaking loss in Game One.
Biron made 34 saves and Umberger netted two goals as the Flyers posted a crucial 4-2 triumph in Game Two on Saturday. "I'll take 36 shots if we win every game," Biron said. "A lot of their shots came on the power play. They like to come on the attack."
Jeff Carter and Daniel Briere also tallied for the Flyers, who squandered a third-period lead in a 4-3 overtime loss in the series opener.
"I never want to talk in terms of the whole series because if you ever get down 2-0, it doesn't mean you can't come back," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "But (Saturday's win) certainly makes the cause a lot better. We came here looking to split, but the first game, when you lose it like that when you had the lead ... I loved the response of our team. We were able to get the lead, battle back and get a win on the road."
Koivu and defenseman Andrei Markov scored goals for the Canadiens, who outshot the Flyers by a 36-23 margin.
"That's sometimes the way the playoffs go," Koivu said. "I don't feel we played a good game in the first one, but we got the win. Then (Saturday), especially in the second half, we put a lot of pressure on them and created all kinds of chances, but their goaltender played well and they got the win."
