Stastny's shootout goal gives Avalanche win over Red Wings

Sep 22, 2006 - 2:45 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Two decades later, the Colorado Avalanche franchise has another Stastny scoring big goals.

Paul Stastny scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the Avalanche to a 3-2 preseason triumph over the Detroit Red Wings.

The son of Hall of Famer Peter Stastny, who is third on the franchise's all-time list with 380 goals, Paul Stastny deked Joey MacDonald and slid a backhander between the goaltender's pads to give Colorado the victory. Paul Stastny's uncles Anton, who is fourth in franchise history with 252 goals, and Marian also played with his father in the 1980s, when the club was known as the Quebec Nordiques.

Under the league's new rules which allow the home team the option of shooting first or second, Detroit elected to begin the shootout and took the lead when Jiri Hudler put a shot off the crossbar and past netminder Tyler Weiman. But Wojtek Wolski, the 21st overall pick in 2004, evened up things when he deked MacDonald and buried a forehand shot.

Mark Rycroft and Brett McLean scored in regulation and Jose Theodore made 16 saves for the Avalanche, who failed to cash in on a two-man advantage in overtime and went 1-for-10 overall on the power play.

Reigning Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom and Hudler tallied for Detroit, which rested Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and six-time Vezina Trophy recipient Dominik Hasek.

Stars Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk did not play for Colorado.
