Horcoff's shorthander in OT gives Oilers win over Flames

Sep 22, 2006 - 4:04 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers had a lot of strange names in the lineup against the Calgary Flames. A familiar one led them to victory in the first stage of the "Battle of Alberta."

Shawn Horcoff scored a shorthanded goal with 62 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the Oilers to a 4-3 preseason victory over the Flames.

With names such as Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Patrick Thoresen and Jonas Almtorp appearing on the scoresheet, Edmonton fans really had to do their homework to familarize themselves with Thursday's lineup.

They could have skipped class when it came to the game-winning tally, however, as Horcoff - who scored 22 goals last season and developed into a legitimate top center - beat goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff with teammate Daniel Tjarnqvist in the penalty box for the winning tally.

Thoresen had a goal and an assist and Pouliot and Jarret Stoll also scored for the Oilers, who rested newcomers Joffrey Lupul and Petr Sykora.

Matthew Lombardi tallied twice, captain Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist and defenseman Roman Hamrlik set up a pair of goals for the Flames, who went 2-for-10 on the power play.

Jussi Markkanen made 26 saves for Edmonton, while Kiprusoff - the reigning Vezina Trophy winner - allowed three goals on 15 shots for Calgary.

Special teams ruled the night as the teams combined for three power-play goals and three shorthanded tallies.
