Downie scores twice as Flyers top Devils

Sep 23, 2008 - 2:06 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Steve Downie scored a pair of goals, and Mike Richards also tallied as the Philadelphia Flyers opened the preseason with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Monday.

Scottie Upshall also scored for Philadelphia, which is looking to build off last season's trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Petr Vrana scored for New Jersey, which out-shot Philadelphia, 29-23.

Richards opened the scoring with 2:48 left in the first, and Downie made it 2-0 just 96 seconds later. Downie struck again, 3:44 into the third.

Vrana tallied at 9:26 of the third, and Upshall capped the scoring with an empty-net tally with 1:20 left.
