Islanders edge Bruins on OT goal by Smith

Sep 24, 2008 - 1:36 AM MONCTON, New Brunswick (Ticker) -- Trevor Smith scored at 2:03 of overtime on Tuesday, giving the New York Islanders a 2-1 preseason victory over the Boston Bruins at the Moncton Coliseum.

Smith, who split last season between Bridgeport of the American Hockey League and Utah of the ECHL, beat a defender before lifting a backhander past goaltender Tuukka Rask for the winning goal.

Jon Sim scored a power-play goal while Joey MacDonald and Yann Danis combined to make 18 saves for the Islanders, who outshot the Bruins, 38-19.

Defenseman Dennis Wideman tallied and Rask turned aside 36 shots for Boston.
