Pouliot gives Oilers shootout win over Panthers
Sep 26, 2008 - 4:17 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- After several tries, the Edmonton Oilers finally notched a shootout win.Marc Pouliot's goal in the third round of the shootout helped the Oilers avoid a disappointing loss and post a 3-2 preseason triumph over the Florida Panthers on Thursday.
Edmonton, which opened the exhibition schedule with a shootout loss to Vancouver on Monday, also fell in the bonus format to Florida on Wednesday. One day later, however, the Oilers - who went 15-4 in shootouts last season - came out on the winning side.
With the shootout even at 1-1, Gilbert Brule hit the crossbar with a snap shot in the second round. Kamil Kreps shot wide on Florida's third attempt before Pouliot beat goaltender Craig Anderson with a backhander for the winning tally.
The Oilers took a 2-0 lead as Tyler Spurgeon scored at 7:57 of the first period and Robert Nilsson netted a power-play goal with 7:13 remaining in the second.
But former Oiler Radek Dvorak halved the deficit midway through the third and Anthony Stewart tallied with 1:42 left, forging a 2-2 tie.
Tomas Vokoun and Anderson each allowed one goal on 11 shots for the Panthers, while Mathieu Garon made 30 saves for the Oilers.
