Late goal by Cooke helps Penguins nip Maple Leafs

Sep 27, 2008 - 2:34 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Defenseman Kris Letang and Matt Cooke scored 2:11 apart late in the third period to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 preseason triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.

After erasing a pair of deficits, the Penguins fell behind, 4-3, when blue-liner Tomas Kaberle beat goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury at 7:55 of the third. But Letang scored his second goal of the preseason with 3:46 remaining to draw Pittsburgh even, and Cooke - who was signed as a free agent during the summer - tallied with 95 seconds left to put the Penguins in front.

Janne Pesonen scored a power-play goal, defenseman Mark Eaton tallied and captain Sidney Crosby added a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Ruslan Fedotenko collected three assists and blue-liner Alex Goligoski set up a pair of tallies.

Former Penguin Dominic Moore opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal, his third tally of the preseason. Alexei Ponikarovsky and defenseman Luke Schenn also scored for the Maple Leafs, while Kaberle added two assists.

Fleury finished with 37 saves and counterpart Vesa Toskala turned aside 20 shots for Toronto.
