Staal scores twice as Hurricanes top Predators

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Eric Staal's power-play goal 71 seconds into the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Nashville Predators, 4-2, in preseason action on Thursday.

The Hurricanes jumped to a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the first period on goals 54 seconds apart by rookie Brandon Sutter and Ryan Bayda. Sutter, the 19-year-old son of New Jersey Devils coach Brent Sutter, had been held without a point in his first four preseason games.

Staal made it 3-0 early in the middle session before adding an empty-netter in the final minute of the third.

Joel Ward and Vernon Fiddler scored for Nashville, which saw the preseason debut of captain Jason Arnott. The center made his first appearance after missing three contests with a flu-like illness.

Arnott skated with J.P. Dumont and rookie Patric Hornqvist on what could be Nashville's top offensive line when its regular season begins on October 10 in St. Louis.

Cam Ward stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced for the Hurricanes before former Predator Michael Leighton came on midway through the second period and made 18 saves.

Dan Ellis played the entire game for Nashville, turning aside 26 shots.

Defenseman Anton Babchuk recorded two assists for the Hurricanes.
