Lee scores in OT as Islanders top Devils

Oct 4, 2008 - 1:55 AM NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Defenseman Chris Lee scored midway through overtime to lift the New York Islanders to a 3-2 preseason victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday.

Andy Hilbert and Kurtis McLean also tallied while Trevor Smith added two assists for the Islanders, who will play the Boston Bruins on Saturday before finishing their exhibition schedule against the Florida Panthers two days later.

These two teams will open the regular season against each other here next Friday.

In this one, Lee took a feed from Sean Bergenheim and fired a wrist shot that beat goaltender Kevin Weekes to the glove side, snapping a 2-2 tie just 2:28 into the extra period.

Blue-liner Johnny Oduya got the Devils on the board just 3:32 into the first session, when he fired a wrist shot past netminder Yann Danis, who finished with 28 saves.

New York responded with two shorthanded goals late in the period. Hilbert tallied on a wraparound with 4:29 remaining, and McLean beat Weekes with a slap shot 2:55 later to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.

With just 27 seconds remaining in the second period, Zach Parise converted a power-play chance, netting his league-leading fifth goal of the preseason to forge a tie.

Weekes made 17 saves for the Devils, who were just 1-for-6 with the extra skater.
