Burrows lifts Canucks past Red Wings

Oct 17, 2008 - 4:07 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Alex Burrows scored 27 seconds into overtime as the Vancouver Canucks recorded their third victory in four contests, a 4-3 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

Jannik Hansen, Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond also tallied and captain Roberto Luongo finished with 32 saves for Vancouver, which improved to 2-1-0 on its current six-game road trip.

"I think everybody was excited about playing the Stanley Cup champions," Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. "Even though they led after two periods, I felt that we were outplaying them.

"In my mind, Detroit is the team that works the hardest when it has the puck - and it works the hardest when it doesn't have it. If we were going to win tonight, we had to match that."

Tomas Holmstrom and defenseman Brian Rafalski recorded power-play goals and Daniel Cleary also scored for Detroit.

Pavel Datsyuk and blue-liner Nicklas Lidstrom notched two assists apiece for the Red Wings, who were playing without last season's Conn Smythe Trophy winner Henrik Zetterberg. The talented Swede sat out the contest due to a strained groin.

"It appears to me that two games in a row at home, we're flat (and) turn the puck over all the time," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "We don't look to me to be in sync. Two-on-1s, turnovers, odd-man rushes, it's just not normal. You can't win like this. We've got to get it fixed, obviously."

Burrows provided a quick and sudden end to this one.

Just 27 seconds into overtime, Burrows skated into the offensive zone and blasted a shot that sailed wide of the net. The puck caromed off the end boards right to Burrows, who gained possession and alertly wristed a shot past goaltender Chris Osgood for his third goal of the season.

"I wanted to get a shot on net, but it went left," Burrows said. "When I got the rebound, I tried to get a quick shot off, and I think I surprised (Osgood)."

"They put in new boards this year, and the puck is really fast off the boards, just flying by," Detroit's Marian Hossa said. "Sometimes you don't even have time to react, and all of a sudden, the puck is behind you. We just have to be ready. It's so fast right now."

Burrows' shot was the only one recorded by either team in the extra session.

"We managed to stay in the game, and then we got a big win in overtime," Luongo said.

With the game tied at 2-2 with 8:53 remaining in the second period, Cleary gave the Red Wings their first lead of the contest.

After serving a tripping penalty, Cleary exited the penalty box and immediately was fed the puck by Datsyuk. Cleary skated in on a breakaway and, after his first shot was denied by Luongo, he quickly corralled the rebound and beat the netminder between the pads for his first of the season.

"We got a good break, let's face it, when Cleary came out of the box," Babcock said.

Raymond forged the third tie of the contest just 2:23 into the third period, slipping the puck past Osgood during a 3-on-1 rush.

Osgood finished with 25 saves for the Red Wings, who lost defenseman Brad Stuart to a knee injury late in the third period.

"(Stuart) got a shot on the knee, on the side of the knee," Babcock said. "No one told me anything about any serious damage, but I haven't talked to (the trainers) yet."
