Sabres hope to continue perfect start vs. Canucks

Oct 17, 2008 - 10:09 AM Vancouver (3-1-0) at Buffalo (3-0-0), 7:30 pm EDT

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- Thomas Vanek is providing an offensive lift and the Buffalo Sabres are winning with great defense.

Vanek will try to add to his league-leading five goals and the Sabres look for their fourth straight win to start the season when they face the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.

The 24-year-old Vanek netted a pair of goals Wednesday as Buffalo posted a 3-1 triumph over the previously unbeaten New York Rangers. Vanek has scored more goals this season than the Sabres have surrendered.

The triumph also gave coach Lindy Ruff his 400th career win - all with the Sabres.

Ryan Miller will likely be back in the crease for Buffalo. The 28-year-old netminder has turned aside 46 of the 48 shots he faced in his two victories.

The Sabres are making it easy on their goaltenders, allowing just 24 shots per game this season. Miller and Patrick Lalime have both responded, surrendering only one goal in each contest.

The Canucks bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 4-3 overtime victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red wings on Thursday.

Alex Burrows scored 27 seconds into the extra session as Vancouver recorded its third victory in four contests this season.

Jannik Hansen, Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond also tallied and captain Roberto Luongo finished with 32 saves for the Canucks, who improved to 2-1-0 on their current six-game road trip.
