Hossa helps Red Wings edge Rangers in overtime
Oct 19, 2008 - 3:44 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Marian Hossa made his 300th career goal a memorable one.Hossa scored 23 seconds into overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday night.
Former Ranger Mikael Samuelsson netted a goal and set up two others and Valtteri Filppula added two assists for the Red Wings, who have gone 3-0-1 since dropping their season opener.
Aaron Voros scored two goals while Scott Gomez and Brandon Dubinsky each registered two assists for New York, which surrendered 45 shots to the defending Stanley Cup champions.
From behind the net, Pavel Datsyuk delivered a centering pass to Hossa, who unleashed a quick one-timer past goaltender Henrik Lundqvist for his 300th NHL goal - and first as a Red Wing.
"It doesn't get any better than this," Hossa said. "The 300th, the first goal as a Red Wing and the game-winner in overtime.
"It's always good to score the first one when you come to the new environment. Our line was creating a lot of chances the first four games, and tonight also. Now that I've got the first one behind me, maybe they'll come in bunches."
Detroit coach Mike Babcock was pleased to see Hossa break the ice.
"It's good to see Hossa get the monkey off his back. He's had so many opportunities," Babcock said. "He walked right down the pipe again tonight. (Datsyuk) just laid it in the space behind their D and he was able to find Hoss coming in. It was a real good shot."
Despite switching conferences this offseason, Hossa still is doing his part to hurt the Rangers. As a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hossa ended New York's season with an overtime game-winner in Game Five of the Eastern Conference semifinals last campaign.
The Rangers opened the door for Hossa and the Red Wings with a foolish penalty. With New York holding a 4-3 advantage, it was called for having too many men on the ice, and Jiri Hudler evened the contest on the ensuing power play with his first goal of the season.
"(Defenseman Niklas Kronwall) took a one-timer and it came right back to me," Hudler said. "I thought, at first, Lundqvist had it."
Samuelsson, Johan Franzen and Tomas Holmstrom scored to provide the Red Wings with a 3-1 lead, but the Rangers rallied back behind Voros, who netted a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the third period - including the go-ahead tally from behind the net.
Ryan Callahan and Nigel Dawes also scored for New York.
Chris Osgood made 28 saves for Detroit, while Lundqvist turned aside 40 shots.
"Tough way to end a game," Lundqvist said. "It was disappointing. It felt like we had it. Even with their chances, it felt like we outplayed them."
"It's hockey. We've got 82 of these," Gomez said. "Weird things are going to happen. It's a long season."
