Surprising Blues eyeing fourth straight win

Oct 22, 2008 - 8:40 PM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Blues, at least in the early going, are challenging the Detroit Red Wings for Central Division supremacy. The Blues go for their fourth straight win on Wednesday, when they host the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings. After finishing last in the Central two of the last three seasons, St. Louis is off to a hot start in 2008-09. The Blues have surged to the top of the division, one point in front of the Red Wings, who have claimed the Central each of the last seven campaigns. A trio of veterans has keyed St. Louis' early surge. Keith Tkachuk, 36, is tied for second in the NHL with six goals, while 34-year-old Paul Kariya ranks tied for second in the league with eight assists. Goaltender Manny Legace, 35, is undefeated in four games and owns a 2.41 goals-against average and .915 save percentage. The Red Wings are coming off their first home win of the season, a 5-4 overtime victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday. Marian Hossa, who signed with Detroit as a free agent in the offseason after finishing last campaign with the Pittsburgh Penguins, scored the game-winner 23 seconds into the extra session. The tally was his 300th career goal and first with the Red Wings.
