Lightning look to follow up win vs. Sharks
Oct 25, 2008 - 10:45 AM San Jose (6-2-0) at Tampa Bay (1-2-3) 7:30 p.m. EDTTAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- It took six games, but Barry Melrose and the Tampa Bay Lightning finally got a win.
They will look to make it two in a row when they complete a five-game homestand against the high-powered offense of the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
Tampa Bay had dropped its first five contests of the season, three of which came in overtime or a shootout. The Lightning also needed overtime to notch their first victory.
After jumping to a 2-0 lead, Tampa Bay allowed two third-period goals, including the tying tally with 36 seconds left. But captain Vincent Lecavalier's power-play goal 1:41 into overtime finally put Melrose and the Lightning into the win column.
Tampa Bay will hit the road for seven of its next eight games following Saturday's contest.
The Pacific Division-leading Sharks fell short of setting a franchise mark to open the season with a 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Friday. Cory Stillman scored his second goal of the game late in the second period to snap a tie as Florida prevented San Jose from recording the first 7-1-0 start in its 17-year history.
The Sharks are tied for the league lead with 28 goals. Captain Patrick Marleau leads the team with five, while Devin Setoguchi and Jonathan Cheechoo have four apiece.
Former Hart Trophy winner Joe Thornton finally got in the goal column Friday with his first of the season for San Jose, which has seen Evgeni Nabokov allow at least four goals in four consecutive games. The Sharks are 2-2-0 over that span.
